How I speed up my Vista

I have noticed Windows Vista built-in indexing service eat up my computer resource from time to time. Usually at night, while my computer is idle. It is ok to use all the resources while the computer is idle, but my computer has got extra cooling fan that turn on when CPU usage over around 70%. So that Vista eating resource really bothers me at night.

But thanks GOD! Not anymore. From 10 vista speed tweaks, I've used only one and turn out my Vista performance very great.

Disable Unnecessary Windows Features

You can view and disable features that you don't need.

  • Click Start Menu then Control Panel
  • Select Programs and Features
  • On the left panel, select Turn Windows Features on or off
I uncheck these features as I won't use them:
  • Indexing Service ( I took risk by assuming I won't need search feature badly)
  • Remote Differential Compression ( At home, I don't have any network)
  • Tablet PC Optional Components ( I am using PC, not tablet)
  • Windows Fax & Scan (I've got broadband, no need to use fax modem)
  • Windows Meeting Space (Nah, I prefer Skype Video conference)

That's it! Up to now, I don't hear annoying CPU fan running while sleeping at night anymore.

In case if you still don't know, this tip could make you WOW! Did you know that Google search box can also use as a calculator? For example, if you type 3+2 in the search box, it will give you the result 5.

There are many functions Google calculator can do. Starting from simple function such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division to advanced calculation such as square root, sin, cos, etc.

How to create and delete invisible folder

Before I'll explain you this trick, I want to warn you that in my Vista, I've got sweat to find way to delete that's invisible folder. So that, if you don't want to mess with your computer, please don't try this trick.

For all those daredevils, here is the procedure:

  • 1. Create New folder.
  • 2. Right-click on it, then choose rename.
  • 3. After that delete the name New Folder and press Alt+0160
  • 4. That'll create invisible space in the folder name, press Enter.
  • 5. Right-click that folder, choose properties, then go to Customize tab
  • 6. Click Change Icon and then choose invisible icon as in below screenshot.

That's it. It's done.

BtoN's Tips : The drama part is that if you want to delete that folder, it won't work in some Windows. For my Vista, it doesn't work. So I have to use DelinvFile to get rid of that stupid invisible folder. That's why I warn you before I start.

If you don't know what is "Bush hid the facts", let me give you a brief explanation. This instructions work on all windows except Vista.

  • 1. Open your Notepad
  • 2. Type "bush hid the facts" without quote
  • 3. Save the file with any name
  • 4. Open the file again

What you see isn't what you typed. This is an easter egg. Or maybe even Microsoft's programmers hate Bush. That's what we knew.

But the truth is that all 4-3-3-5 strings work. So if you type "this app can break". The same results. It appears to be bug from Microsoft which has been fixed in Vista. Here is someone from JCXP.net forum explanation:

Whenever we open a text file in notepad, it determines whether the text is ASCII or Unicode.. But actually there is no way in the world to exactly determine whether the text is ASCII or Unicode.. There is a function called IsTextUnicode in windows API.. The function does some tests on the text based on statistical data.. This is what MSDN says about the function..
"The function uses various statistical and deterministic methods to make its determination.. These tests are not foolproof. The statistical tests assume certain amounts of variation between low and high bytes in a string, and some ASCII strings can slip through. For example, if lpBuffer points to the ASCII string 0x41, 0x0A, 0x0D, 0x1D (A\n\r^Z), the string passes the IS_TEXT_UNICODE_STATISTICS test, though failure would be preferable."

Okay enough is enough. I hope now you get the idea of what's really going on.

After I have found out about Google Flight simulator, I have noticed that Marco submitted his story to four community based sites : Digg, Reddit, Shoutwire and Slashdot, at the same time. As Slashdot is editorial based, I won’t discuss about that here.
Here are the screenshots for the other three.

Oh My GOD! 352 views and only 2 shouts?
Come on, this article definitely deserve to be shouted. It is impossible that all those 352 people have already known about this easter egg before Marco.

When you compared with Digg and reddit, all the community users gave Marco the diggs and points he deserved.

Why all these Shoutwire users are so mean? Maybe they can't shout anymore as their voice are running out? Come on shoutwire, you can be a lot better than this. I don't mean to offend anyone, just sharing my thought.
